This is Tyler.
It was inspired by The City of Roses. Both of them.
When I sat down to paint one day I was specifically thinking about POrtland, Oregon and how it is known as The City of Roses. But as I searched for images that i liked something pushed it's way up through the recesses of my memory: Portland wasn't the only "City of Roses".
NO, I knew that about Portland because I had remembered my dad mentioning it when I had made a trip there a few months earlier. He had spent three years of his childhood living in Portland and tells all of his Pacific Northwest tales with a Texas accent.
And that's what I had remembered: He grew up in Tyler Texas where they have a world renown rose garden, rose museum, and where singing "The Yellow Rose of Texas" is basically required to pass kindergarten.
Tyler, Texas is where my parents met and where we would always travel to during the holidays. I can navigate it and it's wonderful Tex-Mex restaurants almost as well as any city I've actually lived in. I realized that Tyler was MY "City of Roses" and by the time the painting was done it had it's name.
The current "Story Behind the Work" series describes the people, places, and experiences that have influenced the pieces in my first art show - Local Color.
